The 6th International Congress on the Popol Wuj follows the tradition of previous congresses, beginning with the first one in June 1979, initiated by Dr. Robert Carmack in the city of Santa Cruz del Quiché. Subsequent congresses were held in 1999, 2003, 2007, and the most recent in 2010, organized by the Center for Mayan Studies “Adrián Inés Chávez” (TIMACH) and the Institute for Mesoamerican Studies and Professor Carmack, in collaboration with various governmental institutions and universities.
